At Home STEAM Project: 008

Apples and their various parts, what are they, what do they do and how can we make a simple floating boat out of one?

008: Apple STEAM Exploration

Just what is inside an apple anyway and which parts float?

What you need:

-An Apple

-A bowl and water

-Toothpicks

-Paper or card stock

Instructions:

-Cut the apple in half, remove the seeds, remove the stem, remove the core and slice the rest of the Apple into 1/4” pieces

-Teach your child about the various parts of the Apple

-Experiment with each part of the Apple to see which parts float

-Next, with the Apple slices, toothpicks and paper, help your child to construct a simple boat

-Experiment floating the newly made boat

-Ask questions about what makes the boat float, what makes it sink, what else can we try?

What they learn:

-The anatomy of an apple

-Buoyancy

When the project is complete:

-Take a photo of the structure and share it with us! Tag us on social media and use hashtag #theRchild, we can't wait to see the results.
